God's Workman, a Portrait

Handbook 4: Article 8 - Part 1: Time and the Works of God: An Introduction

A workman is the handiwork of God for the purpose of good works.

"For we are God's handiwork recreated in Christ Jesus that we may do those good works which God planned beforehand for us, taking paths which He prepared ahead of time that we should walk in them."

Ephesians 2:10

A workman "works" out his salvation with fear and trembling.

"So then... just as you have always obeyed... work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure."

Philippians 2:12, 13

A workman presents himself to God.

"I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, well-pleasing to God; which is your spiritual service of worship."

Romans 12:1

"...and coming to Him as to a living stone... you also, as living stones, allow yourselves to be built up (or build yourselves up) as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ."

1 Peter 2:4, 5

A workman serves the purpose of God in his generation.

"David served the purpose of God in His own generation..."

Acts 13:36

A workman does all God's wills.

"I have found David, a man after My own heart who will do all My will(s)."

Acts 13:22

"I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed forever."

2 Samuel 2:35

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father."

Matthew 7:21

"Therefore look carefully how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is."

Ephesians 5:15-17

A workman walks in the same manner as Jesus walked.

1 John 2:6

"Truly, truly... the Son can do nothing of Himself unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son does also."

John 5:19

A workman echoes the words of Jesus.

"...a body Thou hast prepared for Me... Behold, I have come to do Thy will, O God."

Hebrews 10:5, 7

A workman is:

"...a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold new things have come."

2 Corinthians 5:17

A workman's conscience has been cleansed from dead works.

"...the blood of Christ... cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God..."

Hebrews 9:14

He has been redeemed from lawless deeds.

"...our great God and Savior Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds."

Titus 2:13, 14

"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many works of power?'

And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'"

Matthew 7:22-23

A workman brings every thought captive to Christ.

"Examine everything carefully, hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every appearance of evil."

1 Thessalonians 1:21

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable in His sight."

Romans 12:2
(Handbook 1, Article 70)

"We are destroying speculations, and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God for the destruction of fortresses."

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

A workman knows and lives and has his being under the absolute authority of God.

"He has put all things under Christ's feet and has made Him the head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all."

Ephesians 2:22, 23

"I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing."

John 15:5

A workman walks in God's judgments.

"...whatever you shall bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you shall loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."

Matthew 16:19

Divine Work
(Handbook 1, Article 102)

A workman continually watches and listens, to see what the Lord will say to him.

Listening
(Handbook 2, Article 8)

A workman remembers.

"...remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness... that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments... He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He brought water for you out of the rock of flint."

Deuteronomy 8:2, 15

The Wilderness
(Handbook 1, Article 23)

A workman keeps his "first love."

"I remember concerning you the devotion of your youth, the love of your betrothals, your following Me in the wilderness through a land not sown."

Jeremiah 2:2

"You must love the Lord your God and obey everyone of His commandments. Listen: you have seen and experienced His greatness and His awesome power... how the Lord kept them powerless against you to this day... how the Lord cared for you time and time again through all the years you were wandering through the wilderness until you arrived here... You must obey so you have the strength to go in and possess the land you are about to enter."

Deuteronomy 11:1-3

The Friend of God
(Handbook 1, Article 64)

Loving God
(Handbook 1, Article 89)

A workman walks in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

"For thus the Lord spoke to me with strength of His hand and instructed me not to walk in the way of the people, saying,
'You are not to say, it is a conspiracy...'
And you are not to fear their fear or be in dread of it.
It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
Then He shall become a sanctuary..."

Isaiah 8:11-18

"And these words I am commanding you today shall be on your heart... you shall fear only the Lord your God..."

Deuteronomy 6:6, 13

A workman is a witness and a servant.

"You are My witnesses and My servant, whom I have chosen, in order that you may know and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no god formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I am the Lord; and there is no savior besides Me...

It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed... So you are My witnesses... and I am God. Even from eternity I am He; and there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and no one reverses it."

Isaiah 43:10-13

A workman confesses that he is a stranger and exile on the earth.

"And I am no more in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Thy name... and I guarded them... But now I come to Thee... I have given them Thy word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask Thee to take them out of the word, but to keep them from the evil one... As Thou didst send Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world."

John 17:11-18

"By faith Abraham, when he was called... went out, not knowing where he was going... By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land... for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

...having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth... they desire a better country, that is a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God..."

Hebrews 11:8-10, 13, 16

A workman knows that, "friendship with the world is hostility toward God."

"Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: 'The Spirit which He has made to dwell in us jealously desires us.'"

James 4:4, 5

"Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away, and also it lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever."

1 John 2:15-17

"For the grace of God has appeared... instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age..."

Titus 2:11, 12

A workman is content.

"...I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need."

Philippians 4:11, 12

A workman is diligent.

"Study (be diligent) to show yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

2 Timothy 2:15

"Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply virtue, and in your virtue, knowledge; and in your knowledge, self control, and in self control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness; and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in brotherly kindness, love.

For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these is blind or shortsighted, having forgotten his purification from sins.

Therefore... be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you."

2 Peter 1:2-11

A workman is faithful.

"Therefore, holy brethren, partaker of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession. He was faithful to Him who appointed Him as Moses also was in all his house... For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house whose house we are..."

Hebrews 3:1-6

"I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful putting me into service."

1 Timothy 1:12

A Workman's Confession

"It is a trustworthy statement... that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all."

1 Timothy 1:15

Chief of Sinners
(Handbook 1, Article 19)

"He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?' And Peter answered... 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.' And Jesus answered, and said to him, 'Blessed are you... because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.'"

Matthew 16:16, 17

"But Thomas... was not with them when Jesus came...he said to them, 'Unless I shall see in His hands, the imprint of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe ... Jesus came... Then He said to Thomas... 'Be not unbelieving, but believing.' Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God.' Jesus said to him, 'Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and have believed.'"

John 20:24-29

A Workman's Prayer

"...(that he will) have a good conscience, desiring to conduct (himself) honorably in all things.

...(and that) the God of peace... may equip (him) in every good thing to do His will, working in (him) what is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."

Hebrews 13:18, 20, 21

"...that (he) may be a faithful servant of Christ... that (he) may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that (he) may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God... "

Colossians 1:9, 10

A Workman's Praise

"Blessed be the God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be and blameless before Him..."

Ephesians 1:3, 4

A Workman's Testimony

"...I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing knowledge of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord... in order that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own... but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus..."

Philippians 3:8-12

"...(I) do not know what a day may bring forth..."

Proverbs 27:1

"But as for me, I trust in Thee, O Lord;
I say, 'Thou art My God.'
My times are in Thy hand."

Psalm 31:14, 15
