Personal Prayer: A Marvelous Privilege

Handbook 5: Article 34 - The Journey to Perfection

"Who is like the Lord our God,
Who is enthroned on high,
Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are on earth."

Psalm 113:5, 6

"What is man, that You take thought of him?
And the son of man that You care for him?"

Psalm 8:4

"For what great nation is there who has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him?"

Deuteronomy 4:7

Personal Prayer: A Closer Look

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace that surpasses all comprehension (Lit. mind), shall guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:6, 7

"...casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you."

1 Peter 5:7

Jesus prayed for personal help from His Father:

"And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, 'Father, if Thou art willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will but Thine be done.'"

Luke 22:41, 42

"In the days of His flesh, when He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and who was heard because of His piety..." (piety: reverence and awe)

Hebrews 5:7

Again:

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

Philippians 4:6

Guidance before making our requests:

"The mind of a man plans his way,
But the Lord plans His steps."

Proverbs 16:9

"Many are the plans in a man's heart,
But the counsel of the Lord, it will stand."

Proverbs 19:21

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And do not lean on your own understanding,
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight."

Proverbs 3:5, 6

"The steps of a man are established by the Lord;
And He delights in his way,
When he falls, he shall not be hurled headlong;
Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand."

Psalm 37:23, 24

"Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow, we shall go to such and such a city and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.' ...Instead, you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this and that.'"

James 4:13, 15

"Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to Me, and hears My words, and acts upon (Lit. does) them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building an house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when the flood rose, the river burst against the house and could not shake it, because it had been well built."

Luke 6:46-48
